New logic puzzle posted! Tiger Bait 11

Tiger Bait 11

There are four doors. One door leads to gold. All other doors lead either to a tiger or an orc.

The door leading to gold has a true statement. Any door leading to a tiger has a false statement. Any odd-numbered door leading to an orc has a true statement; any even-numbered door leading to an orc has a false statement.

Which door leads to gold?

Door 1. No more than two doors lead to orcs.

Door 2. The third door leads to an orc.

Door 3. If this door leads to an orc, it’s the only one that does.

Door 4. There is a Silver Spoons poster on the other side of this door.

  • Answer:

Suppose the statement on door 1 is false. Then three doors lead to orcs and one leads to gold. But then door 1 leads to an orc or gold and must have a true statement, which is a contradiction. Therefore, the statement on door 1 is true.

Suppose the statement on door 2 is true. Then door 3 leads to an orc, and is the only one that does. Then door 2, with its true statement, must lead to gold. But then door 1, which is still true, must lead to an orc, making the statement on door 3 false, which is a contradiction. Therefore, the statement on door 2 is false and door 3 does not lead to an orc. This makes the statement on door 3 vacuously true and therefore, since it does not lead to an orc, it must lead to gold.
