Animal Circus Logic Puzzle

Dr. Loon’s Amazing Animal Circus is made up of cats, dogs, and gerbils. Each animal is black, white or brown, wears a red, yellow or blue costume, and can do one of three tricks: jumping rope, playing dead, or balancing a ball on their nose. Each of the eight animals has a unique combination of traits (species, color, costume and trick) that fits these rules:

Clues:

  1. All black animals wear red costumes; no animal wearing a red costume balances a ball on its nose.
  2. All gerbils wear blue costumes; no animal wearing a blue costume plays dead.
  3. Only cats are brown; no brown animal balances a ball on its nose.
  4. No dog wears a yellow costume; no cats are white.
  5. Only gerbils jump rope.

Animals:

  • Buddy jumps rope.
  • Bella is brown.
  • Charlie is a dog.
  • Chloe wears a red costume.
  • Jasper is black.
  • Josie is a cat.
  • Smokey wears a yellow costume.

Answer:

We know that there are eight animals, each with a unique combination of traits, so to solve this puzzle, we need to know what the different possible combinations are.

Consider cats. From 4, we know no cats are white, so we only need to consider black and brown cats. Consider a black cat. From 1, we know a black cat must wear a red costume. From 1 and 5, we know such a cat can’t balance a ball on its nose or jump rope, so it must play dead. Now consider a brown cat. From 3 and 5, we know a brown cat can’t balance a ball on its nose or jump rope, so it must play dead. From 2, we know it can’t wear a blue costume, so it must be wearing a red or yellow costume.

Now, consider dogs. From 4, we know no dog wears a yellow costume, so it must be wearing a red or blue one. Consider a dog wearing a red costume. From 1 and 5, we know it doesn’t balance a ball on its nose or jump rope, so it must play dead. From 3, we know dogs aren’t brown, so it must be black or white. Now consider a dog wearing a blue costume. From 2 and 5 we know it doesn’t play dead or jump rope, so it must balance a ball on its nose. From 1 and 3, it can’t be black or brown, so it must be white.

Finally, consider gerbils. From 2, we know it wears a blue costume. From 1 and 3, we know it can’t be brown or black, so it must be white. Also from 2, we know no animal wearing a blue costume plays dead, so it must balance a ball on its nose or jump rope.

The combinations are summarized below.

SpeciesColorCostumeTrick
ACatBlackRedPlay Dead
BCatBrownRedPlay Dead
CCatBrownYellowPlay Dead
DDogBlackRedPlay Dead
EDogWhiteRedPlay Dead
FDogWhiteBlueBalance Ball
GGerbilWhiteBlueBalance Ball
HGerbilWhiteBlueJump Rope

From this and what we already know about each animal, we can determine which of these animals is Sophie. Buddy jumps rope, so he must be (H). Smokey wears a yellow costume, so he must be (C). Bella is brown and not (C), so she must be (B). Josie is a cat and not (B) or (C), so she must be (A). Jasper is black and not (A), so he must be (D). Chloe wears a red costume and is not (A), (B), or (D), so she must be (E). Charlie is a dog and not (D) or (E), so he must be (F). That means Sophie is (G), and she is a white gerbil in a blue costume who balances a ball on her nose.

Answer:

This puzzle can best be solved through process of elimination. Let’s look at each person, one by one.

Amy is wearing a mask and drinking punch. From clue 1, we know she did not enter the dance contest. From clue 2, we know she is not dressed as a superhero. Therefore, from clue 3 we know she is human.

Bert is wearing a mask and not drinking punch. Either he’s dressed as a superhero or he isn’t. If he is, then by clue 5 he can’t be an alien. If he isn’t dressed as a superhero, then by clue 3 he must be human. In either case, Bert is human.

Charlene is drinking punch and not wearing a mask. Either she’s dressed as a superhero or she isn’t. If she is, then by clue 3 she must be human. If she isn’t dressed as a superhero, then by clue 2 she entered the dance contest. By clue 4, she can’t be an alien. In either case, Charlene is human.

Dimitri is neither drinking punch nor wearing a mask. Either he’s dressed as a superhero or he isn’t. If he is, then by clue 5, he’s human. If he isn’t dressed as a superhero, then by clue 2 he entered the dance contest – and we can’t tell if he’s human or alien. At this point, we don’t have enough information to decide.

Evelyn is dressed as a superhero and entered the dance contest. Either she’s drinking punch or she isn’t. If she is, then by clue 4 she can’t be an alien. If she isn’t drinking punch, then by clue 5 she can’t be an alien. In either case, Evelyn is human.

Frank is dressed as a superhero and did not enter the dance contest. By clue 2, he must not be wearing a mask. Therefore, by clue 3, he must be human

Gladys entered the dance contest and is not dressed as a superhero. Either she’s drinking punch or she isn’t. If she is, then by clue 4 she can’t be an alien. If she isn’t drinking punch, then we can’t tell if she’s alien or human. Once again, we don’t have enough information to decide.

Harold neither entered the dance contest nor dressed as a superhero. By clue 2, he must be wearing a mask. By clue 3, he must be human.

We’ve eliminated six of the attendees as human; therefore, the two aliens must be Dimitri and Gladys.
