Kahn's Cons Contest

Chapter 4

Kahn's Cons Contest Index

Friday afternoon, five o'clock. You're closing up the office to start your weekend scotch binge when the phone rings.

"Get down to the First Bank of Chicago," says the voice on the other end.

"What's the story, O'Malley? They giving away free toasters again?"

"No, they were robbed. Kahn's gang." O'Malley's voice is taut. The Commissioner himself is probably somewhere nearby, raising a stink. "There's another note. You gotta come look at it. We think it shows where they're gonna hide the loot."

You hurry down to the bank. A solid three-story building, it looks impenetrable and secure, except for the cops scurrying in and out like ants to a picnic basket. A uniformed officer blocks your entrance until O'Malley comes out and grabs you.

Entering, you see the charred remains of the bank vault door. "Dynamite?" you ask.

O'Malley nods grimly. "About an hour ago. The blast killed a security guard and a young mother in from Evanston. We gotta crack this case. The Commissioner's riding everybody. I wouldn't want to be Hanlon right now." You glance over at Detective Hanlon, currently having a discussion with Commissioner Davis. Davis' face is bright red; Hanlon's is white and clenched and he's staring intently at the ground.

"The only lead we got," continues O'Malley, "Is this note. Fell out of one of the robbers' pockets."

Jokers and waiters took fish. Walk up one, shoot green toe. Rum is in a can. Flatter Tina so Larry K won't reach. Abe came in a cab. Pinch Nia - she missed a crumb. Take money to safe drop, G-Man to zoo.

"Abe again," you mutter. "And now Nia, Tina and Larry K. Any of those names..."

"No, never heard of any of them," scowls O'Malley.

"The last line almost makes sense," you say.

"Yeah, almost," replies O'Malley. "And we got guys headed down to the Lincoln Park Zoo right now. But there weren't any Feds here today, and the robbers didn't take any money."

"What?"

"They left the cash. Musta known it was marked. But they took ten grand in gold bars."

Can you decipher the note?
